Abstract

Weather and climate extremes are significant for human safety and well being, as they can generate natural hazards and disaster events. Floods are the major and most frequent natural hazards affecting Poland. It damage lives, human environment, causes the loss of economy and health, thereby determination of the exposure to flooding is of great interest for flood mitigation and prevention. In presented study the extreme value analysis approach have been applied using rainfall and flows data for selected site of Vistula catchment (Poland) to find areas vulnerable to floods. Moreover, a range of modules implemented in GRASS GIS software has been used during analysis, including r.hazard.flood, which is a useful and rapid tool for a preliminary delineation of flood areas where time consuming hydrological-hydraulic simulations are not affordable or convenient. The acquired results have been collated with data describing past flood impacts and their direct negative effects on populated areas, recorded in years 1994 – 2011, and provided by the National Headquarters of the State Fire Service of Poland.
