DailyMeteo.org/2014 Conference

If you have not yet registered for the conference and training sessions, please visit the conference website or contact the local organizers. The registrations will close by the end of the May 2014, after which the final programme will be published. FYI, we are expecting about 75 participants from over 30 countries. We are excited to be able to host such an interdisciplinary conference that will allow a number of leading climatologists/meteorologist and R developers to meet at one place.

DOC TEMPLATE FOR DAILYMETEO/2014.

A number of selected extended abstracts will be invited for submission for the special issue on "Spatial and spatio-temporal models for interpolating climatic and meteorological data" (Spatial Statistics journal; associate editors: Hengl, Pebesma and Hijmans).

  • Submissions open: 1st of July 2014

  • Submissions close: 15th of October 2014

  • Acceptance deadline (closing of the special issue): 1st of March 2015

How will be the conference papers/talks selected for the special issue? All authors are invited to come and present their work at the conference. This is absolutely the best strategy to submit for this special issue (but it is not a requirement). At the end of the conference, the scientific committee (consisting of the keynotes and conference organizers) will rank presented papers and then individually invite 10-12 authors/groups to submit full lenght papers to be included in the special issue of the Spatial Statistics journal. These authors/groups will be warmly encouraged to submit their work for the special issue, nevertheless all the invited authors will have to go through the peer review process just as any other paper submitted to the Spatial Statistics Journal.

Time is short so start preparing already because the submission will open in only 6 weeks time!

  1. Download the Elsevier article template (e.g. LaTeX template);
  2. Study the themes of interest;
  3. This special issue is about methods for interpolating climatic and meteo data, but also about using Open Source software to achieve this. Consider using a combination of R and LaTeX code to produce papers that include both formulas and code snippets.

GIS models of 2014 Balkan floods: what have we learned / how can we help?

I am sure you have read about this in the news, but last 5-6 days Serbia has been experiencing worst floods in last 120 years (at least). This satellite image says it all. There are tens of human casulties and thousands were evacuated. Situation in Belgrade is stable (there is enough water, power, food etc), so we predict that the situation is going to stabilize soon and our conference will go without any complications. To try to contribute to the battle against such extreme events, several of the members of scientific committee have suggested that we reserve a block of ca 1 hour at the conference to discuss the GIS models of 2014 Balkan floods, i.e. how can the tools and data we use help us predict such events at higher accuracy. All contributions / suggestions please forward to the conference organizers.

To learn more about how you can help / make a donation for the countries in the region, visit e.g. the Google Crisis Response page on Balkan Floods 2014.
